A freshwater biologist and a psychiatric nurse undertook the 'Chasing Lorraine Expedition' to find out how hydroelectric development had affected the Columbia River and to develop an oral history. The duo sailed aboard a Prindle 18-2 catamaran when they explored the 1,247-mile river in the summer of 1995.

A novice sailor's humorous account of his first sailing experience with two friends in Lake Michigan is provided. The fear and physical discomfort he felt due to his complete lack of experience and knowledge of the activity are described.
