The initial popularity of fishing lures depends more on the eye appeal of their designs than on their effectiveness in catching fish. The availability of the Rapala balsa minnow and other standard lures was limited at first, until news of their effectiveness spread.

The Thaimacu Rapids Camp, on the Sao Benedito River in Brazil, offers fishers the opportunity to catch fish such as peacock bass, matrinxa and cachorra. The river also is home to the jacare, or caiman, an active, exciting fish to catch.
