The influence of racing design on the design of cruising boats is discussed. Improvements in speed and performance can make sailing more enjoyable. However some design can cause problems for the cruiser, for example the genoa which, it is suggested, is impractical for cruising.

A yacht previously designed in 1976 is rethought in the light of the technical advances of the following twenty years. The designer includes some features from powerboat design on the inside whilst producing an elegant yacht.
