Gastric emptying of cold beverages in humans: effect of transportable carbohydrates
Article Abstract:
This article examines the effects of varying the types and amounts of transportable carbohydrates in cold beverages on gastric emptying rates. Findings indicate that gastric volumes and emptying rates remain constant across carbohydrate solutions and that cold beverages are warmed to stomach temperature within minutes after ingestion.

Palatability and voluntary intake of sports beverages, diluted orange juice, and water during exercise
Article Abstract:
Study attempts to shed light on some of the sensory and palatability issues related to four commonly recommended types of beverages: commercial 6% carbohydrate-electrolyte sports beverage, homemade 6% carbohydrate-electrolyte beverage, diluted orange juice, and water. The key focus of the study was to assess the relative ability of some common beverages to promote voluntary fluid intake.

A comparison of the gastric emptying characteristics of selected sports drinks
Article Abstract:
Tests indicate that repeated ingestion of an 8% CHO driink during exercise significantly lowers the rate of gastric emptying at these carbohydrate concentrations, but lower carbohydrate concentrations do not. Beverage osmolality is less important than beverage enrgy content in influencing gastric emptying rate at these carbohydrate concentrations.
