UK Inland Waterway Freight Carrying - Decline and Resurgence
Article Abstract:
Inland waterways were a primary way to transport goods in the United Kingdom and have been in use for centuries. Once other means of transportation were developed, the waterways declined in service and frequency of use. A history of the British waterway system is provided. In 1983, the government began a program to improve and revive the waterways. As it is now, the waterways are unable to compete because of government subsidies to other forms of transportation and because of the lack of facilities improvement. New modern methods of transport will make the system more competitive.
