Pheasant flushes
Article Abstract:
Pheasant hunters miss their large targets not because of the birds' alleged vertical flushes, but because they shoot too quickly and aim at the whole bird instead of locking in on a particular part. Pheasants may have flushed vertically more often in the past because fields were more heavily wooded.

A turkey-hunting trip to Kirksville, MO, is described. The turkey hunt, sponsored by Modern Muzzleloading Inc, was organized to demonstrate the effectiveness of a black-powder shotgun. Despite numerous turkey calls and even an inflatable decoy, no turkey will come within range.

Morel mushrooms: sometimes it pays to bypass the birds and focus on fungus

Morel mushrooms can be a distraction during turkey-hunting season, and dedicated mushroom hunters may not be very good turkey hunters. Recognizing and gathering morel mushrooms, and their preparation, are discussed.
