Firefighter Steve Stoltz has a 4-phase plan for hunting trophy whitetails. He studies aerial photographs and selects trees for stands six months before the hunting season, in the summer he is studying the activity and location of the deer, in early autumn stands are hung ready for the big kill in November.

Most deer hunters wait until after summer to do their serious deer hunting and use the early part of season to scout. Due to the predictability of their feeding patterns, the early part of the deer-hunting season is a good time to hunt as well.
