Population-based reference standards for cardiovascular fitness among U.S. adults: NHANES 1999-2000 and 2001-2002
Article Abstract:
A study aims to determine the distribution of cardiovascular fitness levels among the US adults based on estimated VO(sub 2max) cut-points derived from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), a large, nationally representative sample of the US population. Non-Hispanic African-American adults, particularly women, are found to have the highest percentage of low cardiovascular fitness among major race groups in the US.

Physical activity in prevention and treatment of coronary disease: the battle line is in exercise vascular cell biology
Article Abstract:
A study of the mechanisms responsible for the beneficial effects of physical activity in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, which lies in exercise vascular cell biology, is presented as the Joseph B. Wolffe memorial lecture at the 50th Annual meeting of the American college of sports medicine. An outline of the rationale behind the proposal that the battle line is in exercise cell biology is also discussed.

Cardiovascular drift is related to reduced maximal oxygen uptake during heat stress
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to investigate whether the progressive rise in heart rate and fall in stroke volume during prolonged, constant-rate, moderate-intensity exercise in a hot environment is associated with a reduction in VO(sub 2max). The result showed that CVdrift (cardiovascular drift) during 45 min of exercise in the heat is associated with decreased VO(sub 2max) and increased relative metabolic activity.
