Many of the most competent golf writers have played the game with enough success in their careers to make them more than qualified to write about it. In many instances the opposite is also true, because many journalists have written well enough about it to have gone on and had great golfing careers.

A journalist recalls how he had four rather tense encounters with golfer Ben Hogan. The first was a phone call in which Hogan forbade him from using an excerpt from his book in Golf magazine. A later face-to-face meeting was also tense, as Hogan slighted an informal request for golfing advice.
