Yamaha's 1999 YZ400F is the newest in the YZ series featuring a lighter total weight, stiffer fork springs and new suspension valves. The YZ400F, which brought victory to Doug Henry at the AMA 250cc National Championship, is expected to be a predecessor of future four-stroke bikes.

White Brothers and Kawasaki both created their own four-stroke motocross motorcycles for the AMA Western Four-Stroke Motocross Series. The two models seek to transform a less-than-600cc trailbike into a motocrosser. Both offer improved performance.

The Matchless G-50 was a dirt bike designed in 1957 but was never built. In 1996, a near-replica of this motorcycle was built and used to compete in the American Hot Rod Motorcycle Association's Motocross National.
