Article Abstract:
The political and philosophical reasons behind the abandonment of Marxism, especially the belief in the impact of the economic realm and social class, are analyzed in the current social situation. The Marxist sociologists of sport have to provide a robust defense of the subtleties of historical materialism in order to understand postmodern capitalism.

The notion that class has to be viewed in relation to other forms of identity is dismissed. Economic deprivation encompasses all the factors of race, gender and disability in leading to exclusion from equality in terms of access to sport and proper health care.
