Satellite-communications update
Article Abstract:
Satellite communications technology allows sailors to stay in touch with family or colleagues while offshore. There are various systems and services available ranging in cost from $1000 to $8000, plus monthly running costs. Some systems provide voice and e-mail, while others only provide one or the other. A description of the various equipment and services available is provided.

AT&T pulls the plug

AT and T High Seas has stopped providing telephone services for marine SSB and replaced it with SEACALL, an INMARSAT-based satellite communications system. Sailboat enthusiasts who cannot afford to replace their SSB systems may still avail of the services of WLO.

An evaluation of the satellite navigation equipment used by sailors is presented. The accuracy of the WAAS equipment and the benefits of the WAAS system over Coast Guard radio signal broadcasting are discussed.
