Research indicates that a diet high in calcium is associated with a reduced risk of kidney stones, but that taking calcium supplements is associated with a higher risk of kidney stones. Researchers suggest that if one must take calcium supplements, they should take them with rather than between meals.

Often basic dietary advice can keep people from developing kidney stones. Advice about stone formers is given. Common stone formers include calcium, oxalate found in food such as peanuts and spinach, salt, and vitamin C. Alcohol is an enhancer of the conditions although not found in the stones.
