Deer have a sense of smell 10,000-times as acute as humans, and can smell a hunter up to half a mile away. Tips on managing human odors include washing clothing in hunter's detergent, and covering as much of the body with clothing as possible. Ways to stay downwind of deer are also described.

Advice is presented for hunters on the use of inner terrains of funnels for gaining proximity to deer. Six examples of these conditions are described, including trail blocks such as dead trees and the edges of changes in timber or cover, which whitetails tend to travel along.

Hunting the lull

Advice is presented for the hunting of deer during the lulls in the deer season. Useful tips include hunting from a Tuesday to Thursday if possible, when other hunters are less in evidence and travelling upwind so that the deer will not be able to detect your smell.
