Hunters should understand the late-season rut or secondary estrus cycle of does in order to accurately pattern the behavior of white-tails. Buck activity during the second cycle is not as intense as it is in the initial cycle, and does tend to stay close to food sources.

Signs of deer are temporary and depend on the season, current weather, and behavior of the animals. Tracks are the best signs to follow and can indicate the sex and size of a deer. Urine spots, shed hair, and other disturbances should also be observed.
