Europe: opening doors to sailors

Non-EU boats may now stay in France for two years without being subject to a value-added tax (VAT), according to French consul Michel Esteve. However, EU spokesperson Ella Krucoff said there is no proposal to relax the VAT but noted that various EU members apply the tax differently.

Cell phone's for chat, not trouble

The US Coast Guard prefers that sailors use marine radios instead of cellular telephones when calling for help. This is because cellular phones cannot alert nearby vessels while marine radios act as a broadcasting system which immediately communicates to all vessels within range.
