Steering clear by the rule of 60
Article Abstract:
A formula for steering clear of shoals and other obstacles by 200 yards is described. The 'Rule of 60' dictates that the angle between dead ahead and an object ahead has the same relationship to 60 degrees as the distance off has to the range.

The pied piper
Article Abstract:
A skipper describes how he went fishing off the North Carolina coast in June in foggy conditions. He was able to navigate in the channel, but many other sailors were unable to find their way with a compass, and had to follow each other.
