Utah's St George Marathon has become one of the most popular races for runners seeking to qualify for the prestigious Boston Marathon. St George's downhill roads provide ideal conditions for runners to run fast enough to meet the minimum time requirements for entry into the Boston race.

The 1993 Boston Marathon was run in the warmest day of the year thus far on Patriots' Day in April and had one of the strongest fields ever for the event. Cosmas Ndeti of Kenya won the men's race in 2:09:33 and Olga Markova of Russia won the woman's race in 2:25:27.
