Mercury's Mountaineer: a city boy in country duds

The 1997 Mercury Mountaineer sells for more than $30,000, but the 5.0-liter, V-8 engine in the sport-utility vehicle makes it easy to drive on and off the road. The drivetrain uses viscous coupling to give more power when the vehicle is in four-wheel drive, but a low gear is not available.
