Surviving St. Clair

The Great Lakes Singlehanded Society's (GLSS's) St. Clair Solo, a popular fall event, is one of the easier races and a good launch pad for the first-timers. GLSS has a mentor program and runs a safety seminar in the spring for the first timers where a sailor must complete hundred miles solo and 24 hours consecutive sailing to participate in the Mackinac Island race.

Article Abstract:
A competitor, from professionals to one-design races, in sailing, sets a goal in a regatta of beating a particular opponent, even if winning the regatta is out of sight, just like in any other sporting rivalry. Regional rivalries around the buoys can be friendly or fierce and some of the famous rivalries over the years are illustrated.
