Wisconsin had as many as 5,000 wolves in the early 1800s, but the species disappeared by 1958. Wolves began to re-enter the state in the mid-1970s, and the population reached 146 in 1997. The Wolf Research Team program uses college students to survey the wolf population of Rainbow Lake Wilderness Area.

A reporter goes on a hike with guidebook writer Michael Kelsey, who is notorious in the Southwestern US. On the hike, the reporter has trouble keeping up with Kelsey, who is 55 years old. At one point they decide to turn around when the encounter water that is too cold to swim in.
