Rope can be helpful for a variety of purposes when camping. The best type of rope is synthetic rope, with a fibrous core and protected by a sheath, sometimes called parachute cord. The diameter sizes range from 3 millimeters to 11 millimeters. The rope can be used for holding a tent, for instance, or keeping food out of reach from bears.

New CD-ROMs offer map databases, which allow the users to map out the terrain of a hike in which they are interested. The Wildflower Production TOPO! and Awesoft Engineering Topo3D are two of these CD-ROMs.

Topographic CD-ROMs by MapTech, Wildflower Productions, NaviTrak, Awesoft, Timberline, and Outdoors are evaluated for ease of use and accuracy. The main drawback of CD-ROM maps is that they often lack trail mileages. Pricing is noted.
