The key to becoming a good helmsman is constant practice. Techniques for improving helmsmanship skills are presented. Some of the basic references to help sailors steer the boat better are the angle of heel, sails and telltales, masthead fly and boat instruments.

Charity regattas are fast becoming a popular way for amateur sailors to help people with diseases or handicaps. For instance, the 32 Leukemia Cups held in 1998, which were participated by 15,500 sailors, raised nearly $1 million for the Leukemia Society.
