Tennis players may give up mentally for such reasons as looking ahead to a more important game, or simply because they know they cannot win. A memorable case happened in 1981 when Ivan Lendl tanked his final set against Jimmy Connors to avoid facing Bjorn Borg.

It is the well-rounded tennis players, such as Martina Hingis and Pete Sampras, and not the powerful servers, who will win tennis matches. Tennis players with power serves but little mobility are no match to players who can move well from the baseline.
