A California Wilderness Coalition report documents the loss of 675,449 acres of potential wilderness areas in the state. A survey of public lands in Utah found almost 9.1 million acres suitable for wilderness designation, a three-fold increase over the estimate in 1979. However, the calculation of potential wilderness is not enough to protect it.

A man who hiked to the top of Colorado's Yarmony Mountain to enjoy the solitude and the view was upset to reach the top and find that there was a road to the top of the mountain. He had been unaware of this, and it made him think about the automobile culture.
