Board-track motorcycle races were discontinued after the sport became the cause of many accidents. The races were conducted in motordromes with wooden boards that were not properly maintained, and which were frequently covered with a slippery layer of oil.

Motorcyclist Ron Grant was considered as one of the fastest roadracer during the '60s and '70s. However, he had also done disreputable deeds that almost caused his incarceration. He died in a boating accident in Northern Ireland at the age of 54.
