The fisherman's edge: if you want to cast your lure to where the fish are, you need to find the fringes
Article Abstract:
Fishing guide George Smith had the uncanny ability to point out areas where fish would be lurking, and he seemed to especially favor areas with 'edges.' Edges may occur where weeds, rocks, or stumps join the open water, or where different types of waters join, or even where sun and shade join.

A matter of degree: if you can read a thermometer, you can learn to find more fish
Article Abstract:
Water temperature is an important factor in finding and catching fish. Fish are extremely sensitive to water temperature because the temperature regulates their metabolism. The ideal temperature for brook trout, for example, is 58 degrees, while for largemouth bass it is 72 degrees.

Interpreting rise forms: understanding where a trout is feeding can often tell you what it is feeding on
Article Abstract:
The different ways in which a trout touches the surface give clues to whether it is feeding on or just below the surface or on the bottom. The fisher can then determine what insects it is feeding on, using an aquarium net if necessary, and use the appropriate fly mimic.
