Mitchell has been missing since early Mar 1995, when he disappeared during the the BOC Challenge singlehanded around-the-world sailboat race. Hope remains that he has somehow managed to repair his disabled vessel, the 40-foot Harry Hornblower.

A saltwater sailor who competed in the 1992 Chicago-Mackinac Race aboard a Freedom 45 describes the experience. His boat completed the 330-mile course in just over 55 hours at an average speed of six knots.
