A hunter describes an eerie turkey-hunting experience. An especially elusive turkey had evaded the hunter for a week and finally one day gobbled right in front of him, except the turkey was nowhere to be seen. Eventually the turkey solved the puzzle by flying out of a nearby tree.

The third edition of Roger Tory Peterson's 'Field Guide to the Birds' inexplicably changes the snipe's name from 'Wilson's snipe' or 'Capella gallinago delicata' to 'Common snipe.' Such an exotic bird deserves better. The intricacies of snipe hunting are discussed.

Rethinking the seasons
Article Abstract:
Spring turkey season always seems to open at the wrong time, and fall season puts turkey hunters in conflict with deer hunters. A six-week season beginning Feb 1 would solve both of these problems.
