A backpacker describes his ambivalence about the myriad rules and regulations that govern backcountry travel. He recounts an experience in Yosemite Park where he was issued a $100 ticket for not having a wilderness permit. He laments that loss of simplicity and freedom that rules bring.

Saying the right thing: what you should, and shouldn't, do when faced with the environmentally illiterate
Article Abstract:
Angrily lecturing other backpackers and hikers on their lapses in judgement is rarely an effective way to alter behavior. It is better to approach a person doing something irresponsible with a quiet voice and a respectful manner. The goal is education, not blame.

Article Abstract:
Backpackers should respect the desire of others for privacy and quiet. Being friendly is fine, but being intrusive is not. Giving people room, being aware of who has the right of way, not frightening people by sneaking up on them and other tips are given.
