The Missouri Breaks: in one part of Montana, game thrives in a remote land of strange rock formations and clay cliffs

A deer-hunting trip to the Missouri Breaks section of Montana is described. The area is made up of hundreds of miles of public land on both sides of the Missouri River and the game includes whitetail deer, mule deer, grouse and pheasants. Four hunters made the trip, with varying degrees of success.

Eye to eye

A hunter describes an encounter with four deer on the opening day of deer season. The hunter was sitting motionless as the deer, including a young fork-horn buck, passed by. The buck paused to look the hunter in the eye for a moment and the hunter let them go, unharmed.

A special kind of anguish

A hunter injured a mule deer buck with a rifle shot that was not sufficiently well-planned. He agonized as he tracked the deer in an attempt to find the animal before darkness fell. The hunter was in physical pain, as was the deer, which was eventually killed.
