Article Abstract:
The effect of refraction, that occurs as offshore waves enter shallower coastal waters, on wave direction and wave height is discussed. On the windward side of islands like Nantucket, refraction causes wave rays to converge slightly, creating higher waves and on the leeward side, wave rays refract sharply can cross to create confused seas.
