Using the pole to change the shape of the spinnaker's leading edge is one way to control where the draft falls. Telltales on the spinnaker can reveal whether the pole is too low or too high on a reach. Trimming the pole controls the sail's angle of attack.

Masts are sensitive to very small changes in their curvature, and controlling mast bend is the most important way to control the mainsail. Techniques for bending the mast so that it matches the luff curve of the mainsail are discussed.
