Al Diem arrived for a long-planned day of salmon fishing at the Grand Cascapedia River area of Quebec, only to find that poachers had netted the fishing area and that it was raining. Diem's fishing was unsuccessful, but a fish left by the poachers became the model for one of his woodcarvings.

Newfoundland's late-season salmon

A fisher describes how he caught a 20-pound salmon in Newfoundland's Lower Humber River. Newfoundland opened part of the river to catch-and-release fly fishing in Sep 1996. Most fishers believe that releasing fish is a waste of time, but some late-season Atlantic salmon weigh over 40 pounds.
