In 1897 a driving contest for women was reported in the New York Times, with the winner being Madeline Boardman with a long drive of 137 yds done with a ball of gutta percha. In 1922, 20-year-old Gene Sarazen anticipated Tiger Woods by winning both the US Open and the PGA championships in the same year.

In 1897 rules for golfing in the snow were laid out by the USGA because some golfers made ruts and rolled the balls into the holes. In 1922 golf increasingly became the cause of wives filing for divorce. In 1947 Babe Didrikson Zaharias won the British Amateur but shocked the British with her clowning.

In 1897 golfing was seen as a boon to the real estate industry but caddies were seen as merely day laborers. In 1922, a case was dismissed against a golfer when it was discovered that his ball did not smash the windshield. Gen. Dwight Eisenhower's attendance at a golf game was news in 1947.
