Wildlife biologists agree that too little predator control, too many antlerless tags and disappearance of winter range are factors in the decline of mule deer populations. Unrestricted hunting seasons and growing elk and whitetail populations are not factors.

US Geological Survey maps can be be instrumental in keeping outdoorsmen from getting lost. Learning to use a map and compass is not difficult. A pocket altimeter can also be useful. Global Position System technology is also available, but it is expensive.
