Unlocking the food tube: balloon may retrieve swallowed objects in a snap
Article Abstract:
Objects such as coins are difficult to retrieve from a child's small throat. A method for getting such objects out without a local anesthesia uses x-rays to pinpoint the location. Then a ballon is inserted into the tube, slid past the object, inflated and pulled out with the object.

Research indicates that latex balloons caused 29% of 449 nonfood choking deaths in children. Experts recommend that children between the ages of 3 and 12 handle balloons only under adult supervision. Children under 3 should never handle latex balloons.
