Mucosal immunity, respiratory illness, and competitive performance in elite swimmers
Article Abstract:
This article examines the relationship between respiratory tract illnesses, salivary immunoglobulin concentrations, and athletic performance in swimmers on the Australian national team. Findings indicate that several months of intense training did not significantly affect immunoglobulin concentrations and that respiratory infections did not affect competitive performance.

Valtrex TM therapy for Epstein-Barr virus reactivation and upper respiratory symptoms in elite runners
Article Abstract:
The effectiveness of proplacic administration of the antiviral agent Valtrex TM for control of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) reactivation and upper respiratory symptoms in elite runners is examined. The results indicate that Valtrex TM reduced EBV reactivation but was not effective in limiting upper respiratory symptoms in this group.

Salivary IgA levels and infection risk in elite swimmers
Article Abstract:
Immunoglobulin A (IgA) levels may help predict an athlete's risk of infection. Saliva from a population of 26 elite swimmers was measured over a 7 month period, and displayed an inverse correlation with the number of infections in both the swimmers and a group who exercised moderately. This project was motivated by the observation that IgA levels reduced after sessions of exercise.
