Catalina Island Marathon participants find that they run approximately 20 minutes slower than their average marathon time. The scenery and wildlife are beautiful especially from the top of Pumphouse Hill. The marathon was organized in 1978 and is limited to 500 runners.

Ibrahim Hussein of Kenya won his third consecutive victory at the 1992 Boston Marathon with a finishing time of 2:08:14. Olga Markova came in first among the women with finishing time of 2:23:43, which ranks as the seventh best time for a woman participant.
