There are some changes and innovations in the 1992 America's Cup yacht races. Most syndicates are racing more than one boat and many of them have steering appendages new to close match racing and asymmetrical spinakers. Umpires will rule on infractions aboard boats following the race.

Peter Balke's Team New Zealand won the 1995 America's Cup races due to superior boat design, teamwork and focus. Team New Zealand's boat 'Black Magic' was designed by Doug Peterson and Laurie Davidson with technical support from Silicon Graphics.
