Moving away from the lee shore is the most important survival technique for a small boat facing a storm. Heaving to is one option when the wind is too strong to keep sailing. Another tactic is to lie ahull if the seas are regular and the wind is from a singe direction.

Seeking shelter from the storm
Article Abstract:
The safest places for a boat to ride out a storm are in a well-sheltered harbor or in deep water with enough sea room to leeward. The dangers in entering a harbor in bad weather must be considered in making a decision about running for shore.

Running before a storm can be an effective sailing tactic if there is sufficient sea room. Lying to may be possible if the sea anchor provides enough drag. Use of stream warps and drogues is also discussed.
