Hurricanes can spell windfalls for sailors. One example is a couple who discovered a damaged boat following a hurricane which they repaired and sold for a profit. Another couple was reimbursed by their insurance company when their boat was totally wrecked by a hurricane.

Wandering writers
Article Abstract:
Some cruisers earn extra money by writing about their exploits while in a foreign country or while in a distressing situation. Tax policies on wandering writers have yet to be legislated. As a result, few traveling writers become successful in finding willing publishers.
