A meal-by-meal guide for use starting a week before a marathon race is presented. Food for eating during the race, and after the race, are included. The day before the race it is crucial to have plenty of glycogen stored up, be well hydrated, and avoid any gastrointestinal problems.

Most sports drinks have the proper amount of carbohydrates to help fluid absorption and provide energy. They also have electrolytes to replace minerals lost by sweating. Sports drinks should be taken frequently during running.
