Adoption of the double hull has been made mandatory for tankers for its ability to withstand grounding without resulting in cargo spillage in case of a low velocity impact. The hazards like increase in the corrosion process, risk of explosion in the void space is to be considered and there is a need to be inert for the overall safety of the tankers.
