Shiprepair and conversion company Cammell Laird added more yards in an effort to expand operations in the UK. The company purchased Tyne Dock Engineering and has taken Wear Dockyard Group under its management, giving a total of 12 docks in area. The expansion increases the company's market opportunities and competitiveness. The group was able to carry out its expansion plans through its strong engineering division.

India's ship repair industry faces bright prospects as demand from its national fleet outruns dock supply. Indian shipyards offer competitively priced skilled labor and competent services such as general repairs, blasting and painting services. However, delays in work completion force ship owners to dock overseas. The government-owned Cochin Shipyard, the nation's largest, handles about 37 ships annually.
