Inert gas: a wake up call

The debate on installing inert gas systems on tankers involves technical and practical issues, including tonnage limits on ships that will be fitted with such systems and effects on workload of ship staff. The installation of inert gas systems on tankers was proposed to prevent explosions on tankers.

The emphasis on maneuverability of product tankers as a way to increase their safety is presented. The Azipull propulsion system used by Swedish operator Brostrom's Bro Deliverer tanker to improve its maneuvering performance and safety is described.
