US yards try to catch up
Article Abstract:
US shipyards have generally operated under the influence of cumbersome US Navy construction traditions. As a result, they have been left behind by their rivals in Japan, Korea and, to a lesser extent, in Europe in terms of shipbuilding production technology. The US shipbuilding industry is only beginning to invest in ship construction technology but are hamstrung by the continued use of outdated equipment and procedures. With the government-sponsored MARITECH Advanced Shipbuilding Enterprise project, US shipbuilders hope to improve efficiency and productivity.
