A sight for sore eyes
Article Abstract:
The UK sightseeing market increased 4% to 400 million people in 1996, according to an English Tourist Board survey covering 5,870 attractions. The top attraction was Legoland in Windsor which opened in 1996, attracting 1,420,511 visitors in the first year. Visitors spent about 1,210 million pounds sterling on entrance fees, retail goods and catering. Better marketing and investment in new attractions were some of the reasons cited for improved visitor numbers, whilst reasons such as poor weather and competition were blamed for a drop in numbers.

Visits to UK tourist attractions amounted to 408 million in 1998, down 1.7% from 1997, according to figures from the English Tourism Council's annual market report. Worst affected were country parks and gardens, with negative factors being bad weather and the rate of economic growth. Some 33 major attractions increased their visitor numbers during the year, while 62 attractions closed. The leading UK attraction opened between 1994 and 1998 was Legoland Windsor, followed by the London Aquarium.
