Caffeine boost
Article Abstract:
The coffee shop sector in the UK has grown enormously during the 1990s. There are almost 300 outlets in early 1999. The growth in value terms was almost 900% between 1994 and 1998, and there is no indication of any slowdown in this expansion. Coffee houses in the UK have either an Italian or an American format which includes the style of coffee, the decor and the type of food on offer. Major operators include Costa Coffee, Seattle Coffee and Starbucks. Coffee outlets appeal particularly to affluent young people, with US comedy shows based around coffee houses being an important influence in the market.
