Calgary flames
Article Abstract:
Various favorable factors have been fueling the growth and transforming the scene of the restaurant industry in Calgary, Alberta, since the late 1990s. Some of these factors include Alberta's soaring economy, population boom, Southern Alberta Institute of Technology's culinary program, interest in regional cuisine, cheap wine prices and an increasingly sophisticated clientele. Industry experts predict that Calgary's restaurant market will continue to grow as local consumers' taste becomes increasingly refined and the economy sustains rapid growth.

Shaky turf
Article Abstract:
Revised smoking laws, a languishing economy, high labor costs, huge real estate fees, poor management, seasonality and intense competition are some of the problems facing Vancouver's restaurant industry. However, none of the issues have infuriated the city's restaurant owners more than the inconsistent municipal antismoking laws. Restaurateurs claim the smoking laws are unfair because restaurants are singled out but not bars where smoking is permitted.
